We regularly bring young Irish sports horses into the yard for backing and schooling through to competition standard and if we can keep them 'cooler' during the process it makes our work that much easier! Last winter I was one of the people who tried Rockies new "Magnacalm" lick. I'd heard it had been university tested and reported at an international horse health congress in Holland, so I was hoping it would be right for our job. The combination of dextrose with pure salt makes the licks palatable and quickly gets the calming magnesium effect into the horse's system on a drip-feed basis. I was certainly very please with the results it achieved with our horses and I have continued to use the product. A bonus is the free access lick leaves us one less job to do! A more relaxed horse learns quicker and we are getting better, faster responses with reduced stress to the horse which is transmitted to the handler. Most of our horses go on from here in South Wales to keen competitive owners around the country. Keeping them as stress-free as possible when they're with us can only help in future careers! Yes, I'd recommend Magnacalm. E & B Twigg Vallintshin Stud Yard Pembrokeshire

Sweet Itch

I have a Shetland pony, Nero, who is now retired from driving trials and suffers from Sweet Itch. When he was competing we added garlic granules to his feed which helped with the Sweet Itch but once he retired he didn’t need a feed during the summer being a Shetland so he had to wear a Fly sheet for the whole summer and sometimes longer. Last year I saw Bug:Go advertised and decided to try it although my five ponies had never touched garlic licks when I put them in the field. As soon as I put this out they all sampled it and the first one only lasted 10 days. It also worked so well that last year Nero only wore his flysheet for about 4 weeks during summer. This year, when several people have been complaining how bad sweet itch is, he hasn’t worn his sheet at all and I’ve been telling everyone to try Bug:Go as it works for my ponies.

Green Issues

"Together with a group of friends I am trying to be as ethically aware ("green") as possible, trying to avoid environmentally unfriendly products, such as salt blocks that have been flown thousands of miles, etc. It was Himalayan rock salt that has set a few people thinking. There is an argument that, because it is so hard, it doesn't just melt in the field. But then I find my Rockie lick doesn't either... Actually, I'm in a salty part of the country, too, not far from Maldon in Essex. I was previously in Bucks, though, and used your licks then as well as now. I have been using the Rockie salt lick in the field for 4 years now. My own 3 horses and others they have been with in that time have all chosen to use the salt lick on a regular basis, but especially in the warmer months. One of the things I love about the Rockie licks is that they last for a long time in the field, almost regardless of the weather. This means that my horses can have access to the minerals they need, as and when they feel they need them without me worrying about having to replace them all the time. In addition to the physical benefits of providing minerals and trace elements, I also feel a secondary benefit to a field lick is that it gives a little variety to the horses daily feeding habits. I tend to move mine to different places from time to time so that the horses have to seek them out, which can help break the boredom of being in the same field. I would definitely recommend Rockie licks to other horse owners."
